Oral Roberts University Golden Eagles
The Southern Utah basketball ladies will try to keep things going Saturday against Tulsa, Oklahoma's Oral Roberts University, while the Golden Eagles suffered their first loss of the season, losing 81-64 to South Dakota State at Frost Arena. Omaha celebrated the milestone of 1,000 career points on Saturday afternoon. The Wichita State Shockers will head to Tulsa to open the 2020-21 season on Wednesday night when they host the Golden Eagles. ORU has a 4-1 lead over Omaha and Tulsa since returning to the Summit League in 2014-15, but both go to Oklahoma State University and Oklahoma City University in the form of two losses.
The nation's number three ranked team, the University of Kansas, was stunned by the unranked Oral Roberts basketball team after an 81-71 victory in front of 7,000 fans at the sold-out Frost Arena.
The Golden Eagles shot 38.3 percent (23 of 60) from the field, including 4 of 17 from 3-point range, and went 10 of 17 from the field behind the Charity Strip. The Bluejays led by as many as 20 points in the second half on a 7-0 run and cut the lead to 12 before scoring the final eight points of the game to pull off a 72-60 victory. The Golden Eagles went 2-for-11 from long range in the first half, while Arkansas went 0-for-3 from deep and scored 10 points.
The Razorbacks had only 36.9% of their opponents on defense on 2-point attempts and the Bluejays only 14.5% from 3-pointers. The T-Birds also found themselves in the top 10 in blocked shots, scoring defense and steals per game. All Golden Eagle athletes are honored in the NCAA Academic Performance Program, and none are currently penalized. However, one team is below the proposed penalty reduction - under NCAA rules for the 2017-18 season.
Accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, ORU is the best Western University in the Princeton Review and represents the second-highest number of all star players in the NCAA Division. I Programmes 2019 - 20. ORU is a mark of 24-hour excellence, having won nine Summit League Commissioner's Cups in 14 years and made 75 NCAA tournament appearances in that time. In 2017, the Golden Eagles won 43-16 (25-4) and 4-0 in the Summit League, beating Oklahoma State 19-0 in both the 2017-18 regular-season games and the 2018-19 regular-season games. The Shockers defeated all four divisions of Oklahoma in the 2016-17 regular season, including Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas and Kansas State.
Senior Emmanuel Nzekwesi led Oral Roberts with 14 points, while classmate Deondre Burns contributed 10 points. Creighton had a 14-10 lead in assists, while OralRoberts grabbed 43-38 rebounds for the Bluejays. Mizzou saw Williams, Blackwell, Dickson and Frank Troup score 10 points each and the Tigers' five other players posted double figures in the game, led by second-string guard Nick Young. D.J. Johnson scored 13 points and freshman forward D'Angelo Russell had 11.
Kevin Obanor scored 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles, while RJ Glasper scored 14 for his second double-double of the season and third of his career.
The redshirt senior Lakota Beatty was the leading scorer at ORU, averaging 13.9 points per game for Lip. His minutes will probably vary, but if the team stays healthy, he will likely come off the bench for the rest of the season. Should the Golden Eagles ever face an opposing top-10 team, Lufile has a chance to defend one of his favorite opponents in the country, Oklahoma State.
The ORU Golden Eagles will participate in 15 of the Southland's 17 sponsored championships, including the Southern Conference Tournament, Big 12 Tournament and NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles program, currently a member of the Summit League, has set strong competitive standards since joining the conference in 1997. The Golden Eagles clinched their first regular-season title in the Southland Conference in 2012 and were held to 13 in the NCAA tournament's South Region. Walton earned an ABAAs in his first two seasons as head coach at ORU, leading them to three major programs - the first in school history and the second - with the most wins in program history.
During his time as a Baylor employee, Mills helped Baylor to two NCAA tournaments and two Final Four appearances. Olson coached Iowa from 1979 to 1983 and led the Hawkeyes to five consecutive NCAA tournaments, including the 1980 Final Four.
The Golden Eagles have suffered only two home losses this season against Houston Baptist and South Dakota State. The Shockers lost their first home game in 17 years to the Eagles 76-71 last season. This is the first time in the history of the program that the team has been visited by a visiting team in a non-conference game. All three of the Golden Eagles' wins this year have come at Texas A & M and a loss in the regular-season finale to Oklahoma State.
